NEW CONSTRUCTION - California Air National Guard Photovoltaic Project

MCC was part of a team that completed a large-scale, three-phase photovoltaic panel installation for the California Air National Guard in Fresno, California. This successful project, which began in January 2007, has been the first installation of its kind on a National Guard base in California. All three phases were completed within budget and ahead of schedule.

Each phase of this project included a carport with a rooftop solar panel system. Not only are these structures highly efficient power sources for the base, they also create a shaded parking area for base personnel. One third of the power used in surrounding buildings is generated by the solar panels, which are monitored on instant, daily, and weekly bases. This allows for a thorough understanding of the amount of power created and used as it relates to the installed solar panels.

Due to the environmental effort of this project, a combined $1.4 million rebate will be provided to the owner by the Government and will be distributed over five annual disbursements. The ANG's energy usage provided by this project is approximately 3 million KW/year, which is a huge cost savings for the base as well. The structures should provide the California ANG with an estimated savings of $150,000 to $175,000 each year. This project provides the base with energy savings, cost savings and an additional shaded parking structure, essential in an area where summer temperatures can top 100 degrees F.

Phase I, Total Value: $2,804,386.00
This 13,250 SF carport was constructed to support 1,176 solar panels that will provide 300 KW of power on average to the base. In addition to the carport structure, solar panels were installed on a separate rooftop. This section of 575 panels will provide approximately 101 KW of power. Although there was a four week delay in receiving the materials necessary for completing the carport, completion of this phase of the project was ahead of schedule.

Phase II, Total Value: $1,698,789.00
During this phase, MCC constructed a 14,640 SF carport, intended to support 1,034 solar panels. It will generate approximately 190 KW. Two power inverters with a maximum of 125 KW/each were required for this phase, which was completed within budget and ahead of schedule.

Phase III, Total Value: $1,800,000.00
Nearly identical to Phase II in process and completion, this carport was constructed with larger panels installed on the roof. Leveraging its experience on the first two phases of this project, MCC suggested using a new inverter that was capable of processing more power and eliminated the need to have two separate inverters.
